"I'll have a Maker's with Bulleit." -Bro trying to order me an old fashioned with Bulliet rye. That would have been a strong drink. I'll have a whiskey with whiskey.
Tl;dr: Early am walk on the beach, looked at our weather apps, looked outside at the real weather, headed back to Charlotte due to rain events, stopped for a food adventure, magically arrived back in Charlotte (They said it was a tough drive. I beg to differ). Went for a walk, went for a run, went for another food adventure, went to a bar.
Bro and Sal like to maximize every hour that they have. This is a good way to live.
They are always keen to get up early, do something active, and make the most of the day at hand. We got up before 8 every day this weekend, and were on the beach walking, jogging, and making sure the dog didn't bite random strangers. They adopted their pup. She's a real cutie, but is very protective around strangers (rightfully so. #strangerdanger). I've won her over this trip, and it feels pretty good.
After our am walk on the beach we headed back to the retirement pad to make breakfast. Again, making an uber-healthy feast to nourish our beach bods (soon-to-be beach bod in my case). I've been trying to have veggies with every meal, with at least one being raw. I feel like I've won a game when I do this for all three meals in a day. WINNER.
I sat and wrote while Sal read her exhilarating novel that she just cannot put down. The title starts with "The Girl", and you just know any novel with a title starting with "The Girl" is a good one. I'm working on my autobiography titles. Feel free to send me recommendations:
- "The Girl With No Job"
- "The Girl: Funemployed"
- "The Girl With The Cat Tattoo" (I would get a cat tattoo just to make this real)
Bro was googling stuff and looking at weather radars. He was like "You guys want to head back?" We were like, "Ok." In my head I was like, "Yeah sure, I could go for a good 3 hour car nap." We packed up and hit the road.
We are always up for an adventure, so we stopped at a random restaurant off of the highway.
We didn't even Yelp it. Yep, we went in blind. When we passed this place, "Chow Daddy's" we all went "Ohh, ahh, Chow Daddy's!" I was just saying that, and I assumed that Sal and Bro knew the place. I was like, "Is it fast food?" They were like, "Dude, we have no idea what this place is." I was like, "Why'd you sound so excited then?" They were like, "Why did you sound so excited then?" Touché.
This was a sign. When you get a sign in life, you must honor it. An adventure will ensue. We made a U-turn to check it out. We could tell the restaurant used to be a drive-through. They had covered up the drive-through windows. We sat down, looked at the menu, and were like, "Holy shit, they actually have decent food." The gods were watching us. It was a surprisingly pleasant meal. Long live Chow Daddy's.
Then we got back in the car and hit the road again. I promptly fell asleep.
The dog isn't upfront about her affection for me, so she waited until I fell asleep to make her move. Here is proof:
They said it rained like crazy during the drive, and it was pretty miserable. I was like, "Oh it's better that I was sleeping, because I would have made the situation worse." They were like, "Sure."
Bro and Sal live in the cutest neighborhood.
It's like straight out of a cute neighborhood book. There's cute houses, cute couples, and cute babies. Plus you can walk to bars. We went for a walk around the hood and then Sal and I went for a jog. I haven't run much in a while so it felt good to get my legs moving like this again. I still kinda hate running. I think I always will. After this we got cleaned up to head to dinner. We were like, "That was fun trying a new place earlier today, let's do it again!" The three of us said this in unison, standing in a small circle with our hands joined together.
We tried a Japanese place that they hadn't been to before. It was also good. We got a bottle of wine for $15, so it's that kind of place. Sal and I shared the wine while we enjoyed small Japanese plates and some ramen. Then when I had a solid buzz, we left to go check out another bar nearby. They had a cool back patio where we looked cute and talked about deep stuff.
This is exactly what I wanted to do in my time off.
I haven't cursed much today, so here I go. It is SO fucking nice to spend time with my brother and his wife. When I was dreaming and scheming about my time off I was like, "Yes, I love to travel. Yes, I love adventure. But I really just want to chill, enjoy time with family, cherish time with friends, and explore my interests." This weekend has been amazing and like I said, "There's always an adventure to be had." It can be small, but life is full of that shit.
I am really really lucky to have such a great sibling and sibling-in-law. I have a few more days with these two assholes, and I think I'm doing a good job fitting in here (just in case I ever want to move into their spare bedroom and let them fund my retired life). I met one of their neighbors and already propositioned him about being the neighborhood babysitter. Obviously I'd only take it if they gave me ample vacation days and paid double for diaper changes.
